Abstract

The Olympic mascots are one of the main symbols of the Olympic Games; they are, usually, animal or anthropomorphic figures, representative of the area where these agonal parties are carried out. They are of great importance for the diverse products that are generated around these events. The first of them appears in the Winter Games of Grenoble 1968, and in those, in summer1972, in Munich. Previously, in the tenth ninth edition carried out in Mexico 1968, the image of a red jaguar was used to identify the event, but not in an official way. The use of these representations has great importance for the Modern Olympics that works in the transmission of values that arise from the sport and in fact its use is a fundamental way to carry out this praiseworthy purpose. The work seeks to characterize each one of the mascots that have shown up in the different editions of the summery parties. In the investigative process several methods as well as qualitative techniques are used that favor the collection of the necessary data. Among them: analysis and synthesis, inductive - deductive, historical logical, analysis of document and the triangulation. The correct use of them, allows us to make known the general data of the 12 opportunities in which these emblematical figures have been used in all the games, from its emergence up to the present time. For that reason the conclusion of this work is that the Olympic mascots are transmitters of messages that favor the philosophy of the Modern Olimpics.
