Piercings oral: a health challenge on athletes in Villa Clara

Abstract

It is evident in athletes of the EIDE "Héctor Ruiz Perez" of Villa Clara that the use of piercing in the oral cavity has gained ground, awakening the interest of Graduates and Stomatologists of the CEPROMEDE of said locality, due to the complications to the health of the athlete, which may cause the use of this garment. It is important to draw up prevention strategies through sports coaches, the medical triad, graduates and stomatologists to avoid the use of them, disclosing the damage to the health of athletes. The fact that there are no investigations on these issues in the Provincial EIDE of Villa Clara, in addition to the above, gave rise to the motivation for carrying out the following investigation. Objective: to characterize the behavior of the use of intraoral piercing in this population group. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, in the period from September 2917 to January 2018. The study universe consisted of 237 athletes from combat sports who attended a stomatology consultation for their check-up, of which 136 constituted the sample selected through simple random method. Result of 136 athletes studied, 15 used intraoral piercing. Of them 12 females and 3 males. Regarding the ages where its use predominated, it was between 15 and 18 years. The most frequent harmful effects were gingivitis, followed by dental trauma and gingival recession. Concluding the use of piercing in the oral cavity in the studied athletes, it was characterized by presenting more frequently in the ages between 15 and 18 years with a predominance of the female sex, and the most damaging effect was periodontal gingivitis followed by dental fractures. and gingival resections.
